As long as Dominic and I have been together, we’ve always had a “spot”. We used to meet at said “spot” to talk, watch the trains, laugh, listen to music, make out…..you know, all that mushy stuff.
If you’re a parent, then you know that gone are the days of leaving the house on a regular basis to hang out with your sweetheart-turned-spouse. Sure the occasional date night is always a treat, but why do you have to wait around for a date night to be able to connect with your significant other?
You don’t have to.
When Dominic and I first saw the town home that we are now living in, the first thing we fell in love with was the kitchen, but the second was our bedroom. Our bedroom is huge. It has two huge closets (mine is a walk-in), hardwood floors, great lighting, and the best part? It has a balcony. We were sold.
When Dominic and I lived in Arizona, we had a balcony and spent so much time outside, on our chairs, enjoying the beautiful weather. We’d eat dinner out there, have drinks, just hangout, whatever we wanted! I think it’s safe to say that in AZ, that was our “spot”.
It just turned a year that we’ve been at this place, and we have definitely NOT spent as much time on the balcony as we anticipated….Until 2 weeks ago, that is.
Here in Chicago, where the weather is already always unpredictable, Fall has graced us early with it’s presence. We’ve had the most beautiful nights for the past few weeks and I think it would be a sin to not put our balcony to good use. . So, two weeks ago, I made us a few chai tea lattes, grabbed a few of our comfiest blankets and a few weeks ago I bought this beautiful candle holder thing from Target…it was on sale for like 15 dollars and I was trying to think of the perfect place to put it in our house, but I brought that outside too. Along with my computer. We got nice and comfy, the candle holder was the PERFECT addition to the night, and we stayed out there for about 4 hours listening to music (we were picking all the necessary songs for our wedding), laughing, dancing, singing. I had such a good time that when Dominic realized it was 2:30am, I wasn’t ready to go inside yet (but we did).
It was in that moment that I realized that our balcony was our new “spot” and we had been neglecting it for an entire year! Since then, we’ve bought really cute little lantern lights to hang up on the railing and we’re probably going to go and buy some chair cushions for our rocking chairs very soon. Another part of the house that we’re finally making our own and I am so excited about it.
(It obviously doesn’t take much to excite me….)
I really do love the idea of having a nice little outside retreat where we can relax and unwind after a crazy day, whether it be to talk about wedding stuff, work stuff, or nothing at all. I love even more that our new spot is right in the comfort of our own home, even if there isn’t a train to stare at. We’re always so caught up in our day to day, that a time for us to unwind is exactly what we need, and has become one of our favorite places to hang out.
Just because it’s a lot harder to get away once you have kids, or even if you don’t have kids and just don’t like to leave your house much (I was like that even before we had Olivia), doesn’t mean you can’t have a favorite spot in your own home that you only go when you want to unwind with a cup of coffee or wine. In fact, I think it’s kind of important to have a spot like that to turn to, especially if you’re having a bad/off day or if you just want to hangout with your friends, or significant other!
I’d love to know– Do you have a “spot” in your home that you always turn to when you need to unwind and relax? Where is it?
P.S. Have you entered the $100 dollar TARGET giveaway that I posted about yesterday?! If you haven’t, you should!
