It’s been a little cray cray around these parts. Last week my dad had to have a major operation, and get his kidney removed. I know. And believe me, it was just as intense as it sounds. This time last week I was a train wreck because I was so nervous. I am very happy to report that his surgery could not have gone better and he is recovering beautifully.
My sister and I took turns being at his side and we even took turns spending the night at the hospital so he never had to be alone. He was in the hospital for two days, and Friday afternoon he was discharged! We decided weeks before the surgery that he’d stay with me while he recovered, and it’s been great. Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous as to how we’d do living with a parent again after so long, but like I said, it’s been great! Olivia is loving the extra time with her Papa and I’m loving it, too. I think it’s safe to say that he’ll definitely be missed once it’s time for him to go back to his house.
Anyway, all of that to say that I’m obviously playing a little bit of catch up. If I was a good, smart blogger, I would’ve prepared for this with some scheduled posts but alas, I am not. So like that month I took off after Christmas, it’s time for a little photo dump of what we’ve been up to!
The Saturday before my dad’s surgery, we took Olivia downtown to Navy Pier to see the fireworks. She’s seen them before, but this was actually the first time that she knew exactly what was going on. All of the different colors were her favorite. Everybody was quietly enjoying the show while my child gave them a nice (loud) narration of the colors that would shoot up into the air: “RED! BLUE! PUHPLE, MAMA, PUHPLE!!!” I’ve learned to embrace her excitement, no matter how many people stare at us ;P
After the show, we walked around a bit. We showed her the Ferris wheel and all of the lights and ended the night splitting a McDonald’s ice cream cone. Seriously, so. good.
^We stopped by a BBQ festival by Dominic’s parent’s house….it was already almost closed, but the rides were still up. Dominic took Olivia on the fun slide and from the top we heard her saying, “No, dada!” Not scared, just a little skeptical. As soon as he kicked off, she was totally fine! She loved it….just not enough to go on it a second time.
We’ve been playing in and with water a lot. My friend Steph came over on Memorial Day bearing treats, including water balloons so you know Olivia was in heaven. Both of our men had to work that day so it was just us girls. It was nice!
A quick trip to the mall on the day before my Dad’s surgery. She would’ve sat in the spot all day, watching the water fountain, if we would’ve let her. And we probably would’ve had it not been like 95 degrees out.

^This man was a true lifesaver this past week. I mean every week he is, but this past week especially. He took two days off to be there for me and my sister, and to take care of Olivia. While my sister and I were off doing grown up things, I wanted Olivia to not have to sit around for all of that. Dominic took her to the park, they went shopping, and spent just generally spent a lot of time together. He’d come in and out of the hospital bearing coffee and lunch for us and so that Olivia could see me (everytime I talked to her on the phone she’d cry when I had to go, it was heartbreaking.) Olivia really loved all of that dada time though because the first day he had to go back to work, all she did was ask for him. I am so grateful for my sweet husband. I don’t know how I’d get through this life without him.
This past Sunday my dad actually came outside for a few minutes. He’s seriously getting better everyday, and I’m so thankful for his speedy recovery. I hated seeing him in such pain in misery. We celebrated by playing with the bubble gun, naturally ;)

And there you have it! What we’ve been up to. It’s not much but I gotta say, following all the hustle and bustle of my dad being in the hospital and taking care of him and all that, it’s nice to kinda lay low and take it easy this week.
